yup This is a native american holly. Some form of a an ilex. The Cheorokees as well as other mountain tribes used one form of this in a weird morning ritual. The guys would get together and drink gourd cups of this until they would ... well vomit. the resulting high was said to be worth this discomfort as it made it possible to hunt for hours without feeling tired or hungry.
It was funny as I pulled up this picture my daughter sitting and watching tv suddenly pipes up American holly. She does me proud.
The fact that the birds won't touch the berries says it is form of black holly. So my guess is
ilex americanus niger sp.
I bet your bees love the blossoms they are intoxicating. The honey is suspose to be really fragramt.
Glad I could help.
Hugs,
Pam
