Purfleet: Heavy metal haul stolen

From the archive, first published Tuesday 8th Jul 2003.

A cargo of radioactive material has been stolen from a south Essex warehouse, police revealed today.

A white Citroen Berlingo van loaded with depleted uranium was stolen from the warehouse in Purfleet.

Staff at the Purfleet Industrial Estate noticed the van was missing shortly before 2pm on Sunday.

While Essex Police stressed the substance holds no specific dangers to the public, both the US and the UK acknowledge that DU can be dangerous if it is inhaled.

The mildly radioactive material is used on the tips of artillery shells to punch through heavy armour.

The company, which has not been named, uses the product to help with the inspection of industrial pipes.

DU is a very heavy substance, 1.7 times denser than lead.
